You may have heard that our marvellous co-artistic director Shauna Macdonald won a BAFTA Scotland award this month. An incredible achievement. It was for best actress in a film, and well-won amidst strong competition. However, it has to be pointed out that Shauna’s win is a hallmark of acclaim not just for one role but for the prodigious body of work she has amassed in her career to date.

Shauna has been a force in her industry for 20 years. Her credentials are numerous and diverse, illustrating her versatility and her outstanding abilities.
Most impressive is that she continues to excel in her art while raising her three children with her husband and fellow actor, Cal, while campaigning for – and winning – the first successful Scottish urban community buy-out, while running her own voice coaching business, directing and producing work for the Edinburgh Festival and the Portobello community, and while advancing Edinburgh Youth Theatre with her exceptional artistic vision. She is a champion of inclusivity and inspires our young people weekly, leading drama classes at the youth theatre. She does many things and she does them very well!

Shauna’s BAFTA win is a well-deserved recognition of her great talent, and furthermore it represents the tremendous accomplishment of a remarkable woman.
